Brussels 2002 Tour Report

A good spirited party this year with both ourselves and our friends from Newington digging to the bottom of the barrel to fill teams. Maurice Dunk had to make up the numbers for Newington and Martin Brown the hosts British United.

Newington lost their first game to BB Eagles 0-2 with the otherwise impressive Graham Cloake missing a couple of one on ones with the keeper. In their second game they hammered the hosts 7-2 which was not very friendly and they finally went down 1-4 to us.

We started with a comfortable win over the hosts British United with goals from Parkinson, Smith, Warburton and Howard giving an easy 4-0. The second game saw us beat BB Eagles 2-0 with goals fro Parkinson and Warburton. In the final game Robinson, Smith, Howard and Parkinson were all on target in a 4-1 win, with the only goal conceded in the tournament by us being a headed goal from Newingtons guest our Secretary Maurice Dunk.

The tournament was duly won by us and the trophy presented for a record of played 3 won 3 -goals for 10, goals against 1. A good spirited tournament well handled by the excellent referees John Cross and Alan Barty who never had to sin bin a single player.

Both Oak and Newington have been invited back next year for a two day tournament and a friendly has been arranged with Oaks new Saturday team Woodstock Park FC and BB Eagles from Ealing. This will take place at Woodstock Park on the last Saturday in August.

STAR MAN of the tour was definitely Tony Hughes who gave the Secretary a weekend off with the organising and mother hen impressions. To top it all he did us proud as tour Captain with an amazing three win sequence! Thanks to all who helped and in particular Robert Warburton and Matt Ball for collecting all the dues.

Back to Dublin next year? Over to you Matt and Rob.
